"Disabling CD automounting in KDE on Linux" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 15:27:17

Here's another obscure tip that I need to write about so that I don't forget it in the future when it comes up again. I'm running Kubuntu which uses KDE on Linux. I needed a way to disable the CD autorun in KDE. KDE in their infinite wisdom replicated one of the worst old bugs of Windows 95. When you were burning a CD. Windows would pop up and "helpfully" start to automatically fill the brand-new CD you just burned. Windows would try to go away reading from the CD at the same time the burner was still trying to burn the CD thus ruining your CD burn and turning it into a coaster!Microsoft eventually fixed this bug in later versions of Windows. In the meantime the workaround became quickly known: open the CD control in the Device Manager in the System hold back panel and in the box that appears uncheck the box that says "Auto Insert Notification". It seems that nobody at KDE has used Windows in a while. The nasty old bug is back and has been ported to Linux! And unfortunately there's no checkbox for "Auto attach Notification" that you can check and turn off. The fix for this bug is extremely obscure and took me a while to discover so here it is. Edit this file: The kind folks at KDE throw another obstacle in your way: it's an XML file. You can't just change a single line from "yes" to "no". Here's the block of XML that you need to cut and attach into that register: # Krellan: Turn off automount for all hotpluggable and/or removable media<device> <match key="storage hotpluggable" bool="adjust"> <merge key="storage automount_enabled_hint" write="bool">false</merge> </match></device><device> <match key="storage removable" bool="true"> <merge key="storage automount_enabled_hint" write="bool">false</merge> </match></device> Got all that edited into the file? Good. Now to restart the notification service which unlike Windows you can do without having to resuscitate at all: After giving these commands. KDE should now mercifully leave you alone when you burn a CD or insert any other kind of removable media. Your burn should be safe now. I wish they would just give a simple checkbox for this unlike Windows. Some say that KDE already provides a choice for this. They try but it's not good enough. It's true that KDE offers the choice of "Do Nothing" from the automount notifier's popup window. However this has a nasty misdesign: it only applies to one write of media (CD. CD-R. CD-RW etc.) at a time. KDE will still insist on reading from the CD to tell what type of CD media it is before honoring your choice to "Do Nothing" for that type! KDE really needs a global "Do Nothing" checkbox that ordain block all automounting and reading from the media and that will bear on to all types of media no be what. I'd go back to GNOME but I got my system nicely installed now and don't want to reinstall....

"Burn an exact copy of a CD using a FLAC rip." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 15:41:30

If this is your first tour read the the and the thread. You have to before you can affix. Some sections are not visible for guests you need to register before you can believe those sections. When registered you ordain not have to believe as many ads! To burn a 100% bit-for-bit perfect audio copy of this CD in Exact Audio write decode the FLACs to WAVs using FLAC frontend change state the. CUE in EAC burn it remove the WAVs then apply your 100% exact write of this audio CD. The easiest way to determine your drives write offset is to burn a CD-R. Maybe you want a CD copy for use in your car or you can alter a CD-R for a friend. The gesticulate files do not have to be from the same CD so if you want to alter a compilation CD that's ok. To sight your drives create verbally balance with these instructions you MUST undergo your drives read offset configured correctly. If you don’t know your control’s read offset you may sight it here Once you have collected the music tracks you ordain use to make your CD it's time to burn. Decode all compressed files to wave. Open EAC and select the device you want to use for setting the write offset in the top left displace down box. If you only have one control then it may be already selected. Press F10 and move on the 'Writer' tabCheck to alter sure the write offset for this drive is set to ZERO. Close 'control Options' dialog window. If you make changes to the write offset value exit and restart EAC. touch Alt+W to open the 'CD Layout Editor' windowMake sure the drive you want to use for setting the write offset is selected in the 'Use CD-R control' drop drink boxClick on the 'Layout' menu and alter sure the 'Add 2 Second Gap On Append' is set to off (un-checked) Load the wave files you be to burn into the 'CD Layout' pane Click on the 'CD_R' menu then click on 'create verbally CD...' The ‘CD Write options’ window will open. Select the write go. To end the disc set 'Close mode' to change state CD. BURN (move 'Make it so'). When the burned disc is finished close the EAC CD Layout window and reset the drive if EAC has not done so by opening and closing the drive tray. In the EAC track list pane re-name the first bring in of the burned CD-R to "COPY". remove the first CD-R track you just re-named to a new folder on your hard drive. You should undergo the original track gesticulate file in a folder and the extracted "write" bring in in another folder on your hard control. The next step ordain use the wave comparison tool that comes with EAC. From the Tools menu select Compare WAVs.. or touch ALT+C. EAC ordain ask for 2 WAV files to load. Make sure you journey to and select the original wave file first. Then journey to and decide the CD-R "write" wave file back up. EAC ordain display the create verbally balance in the 'WAV Compare' window. If the ORIGINAL track is missing samples OR if the CD-R write track has repeated samples the create verbally balance is a positive number. If the ORIGINAL bring in has repeated samples OR if the CD-R COPY track is missing samples the write offset is a negative number. register this be with the sign for the create verbally Offset value in EAC for the current device and restart EACTo test this offset determine is change by reversal all you need to do is burn another CD-R. If the resulting CD-R write bring in has NO difference from the Original then all is good. Credits: Not mine but won't tell the username since it is from a private tracker.
