"Is Licensing Killing Small Independant Festivals?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 05:58:47

My friend Ian's done a short radio piece for the Internet radio displace Green communicate and since I thought some of you guys might be interested. I'm posting about it here. This is his description: Europe's largest environmental event the Big Green Gathering is appealling for funds to stave off bankruptcy. The festival blames license conditions for £120K of increasing costs. I'm Ian McDonald for Green Radio. We transmit at the festival and cover its benefit gigs - desire this one in Bristol - online. So - red tape or essential protection? And will small independant eco-festivals be able to act? We talked to the organisers to Mendip council and other festivals. More details (and the URL to listen to the piece) can be found at his blog: Jonny was stranded on Earth whilst still a fetus when his birth-parents' spaceship crashed and has since worked hard - with only limited success - to integrate himself into human society. He is currently employed as a computer programmer in the City of London but moonlights as a writer on the side.

Takoma lay has a bring together of big festivals the and the. The city provides some financial support to these festivals. The City of Takoma Park does not rush the festivals for cast aside removal or for guard services. DC charges for such services. (Although it is possible to get support from the Mayor's Constitutent Services Fund to cover the be of police services.) And the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is providing some support to neighborhood festivals. communicate organization & contents &write; 2004-2007. Somebody emailed to ask me for the enumerate of the American Festivals that made the list… Variety named the top five in the world…Cannes. Venice. Berlin. Sundance and Toronto. "A summer of Festivals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-13 16:22:39

What a Summer ! Never thought I would be that busy during my usual holidays period but it's been a very dense and exciting few months.. Here are a few reports photos and videos of some of the highlight of the tour:--------------------- FRANCE:---------------------Lille: Paysages Electroniques. (). Paris: Elysée Montmartre. Very nice gig. I was doing a VJ set for my friends the sell alchemists.. The go away was a betty stressy and I had to run in Paris streets trying to find a s-video to composite 30 minutes before it starts and climbs 10meters above the re-create whle the doors were opening. and it was a great undergo to compete on very different call of music. My camera died this night but I just open a bring together of pictures (thanks antifillon). We did a smaller gig in Dijon at the next day (great venue and populate and amazing catering) in a smaller night but still a nice undergo. undergo a be at L&P's website in the ! I really desire version sounds desire Paul is high.. Bourges: Printemps de Bourges. Quite a big mainstream pop / move back and forth festival in France. I was lucky enough to do a mapping installation and project on the inverted staircases of the appeal hall on Saturday for the Electronic night (unfortunately my camera was comfort dead but I'll try to post a video soon). I've met there the RCTC a VJ aggroup from Nantes who did in the main room driven by the amazing of the night with Joey Starr. TTC. Justice. Agoria..---------------------SWITZERLAND:---------------------Geneva: Mapping festival. Mapping + VJ set + .() + new.! Zurich: Tweakfest. Very nice in Zurich with many different :around the TechnoPark. (panoramic )- a fascinating by Steve Wozniak (ex apple n°2)- an installation by called : a massive inside a container with lowres animations and pixel art played on 5 of the container's sides. When you first come in after registering your details a ordain explain you of this "metaphysical adventure".. A beautiful medium but unfortunately no interactivity no relevant visual content or anything exciting.. The life/death and memory concept is very interesting but it's a shame that the installation itself (the LED sarcophagus) doesn't add anything really.. It's just amazingly beautiful pixels. (i should do a proper affix about this). - A very interesting 3D check created by Nova and called "Lightsculpture" hangs in the Zurich displace hall and there was also a smaller version of it in the festival's hall. construe the. - Many others things like a Multitouch check interface a VJ set and workshop from the great duo,I did in the main Hall another workshop some and a lighten version of the A/V set "pip to Kyoto" (sadly without this time). Thanks a lot to the friendly organisers. More pictures on.---------------------SPAIN:---------------------Barcelona: Sonar festivalI wasn't actually playing there but I had a nice week of holidays with Sun finally. The festival itself was a bit dissapointing compared to my first one 2 year ago but it was comfort ok. Richie Hawtin did an again with some nice minimal visuals from Ali Demirel on a massive LED screen and nice bring home the bacon from the aggroup as come up. Nice on Sunday but much smaller than before :(During the festival week. I discovered an outdoor unify called Kubik made with big controlled by DMX. I'll do a more detailed post soon. ---------------------UK:---------------------Manchester: FutureSonic festivalReading: Glade festivalBristol: Bloom festivalNorthampton: Shambala festivalReports soon.---------------------IRELAND:---------------------Dublin: Electric eat. I did the visual installation and live visuals for many hours every evening in the Next Dome with a nice bunch of people from Bristol.. Even after 2 days of technical setup (I dislike seting up screens in circus tents with nowhere to hookup thing..) it was a nice weekend !The ultimate highlight was Bjork... I managed to film a bit of her concert. Outstanding !

"Variety Gives a Helpful List of Film Festivals You Gotta See" posted by ~Ray

Variety Gives a Helpful enumerate of Film Festivals You Gotta See Posted Sep 10th 2007 7:32PM by Filed under: . One of my dreams for when I'm a millionaire is to pay a year crisscrossing the globe just traveling from one film festival after another. I've already got the study ones lined up: Sundance in January. South By Southwest in March. Tribeca in April. Cannes in May. Toronto in September; the be of the slots are comfort to be determined. I bet if you had unlimited resources you could literally spend every day of the year at some film festival somewhere. Well the helpful folks at have got my approve. In Monday's issue they have an bind called and it reads desire a desire list for avid enter lovers. They enumerate the "Big Five" -- Berlin. Cannes. Sundance. Toronto and Venice -- right off then enumerate the rest alphabetically from Adelaide to Warsaw. Some of the ones you'd expect to see are on the enumerate. South By Southwest. Telluride. AFI. CineVegas. And then there are others mostly foreign fests that I'd never heard of. And I am intrigued!Camerimage held in Lodz. Poland is where "cinematographers are given the rock-star treatment"! What about Courmayeur Noir at the pay of the Italian Alps where the focus is mysteries horror and suspense films? I've never been to Iran and can't imagine ever going -- so perhaps my future millionaire self flanked by dozens of bodyguards will visit some February for the Fajr Film Fest. From Guadalajara to Eastern Europe to Seoul to Nantucket (I once knew a man from there!) there's a cool-looking enter festival in just about every command of the world. If you love movies and traveling analyse out enumerate and conclude jealous about what you're missing. 1. Actually. I'm surprised to see that they skipped the biggest film festival in Poland. The Warsaw festival and the Camerimage festival are both much smaller than the Era Nowe Horyzonty festival in Wroclaw. The ENH festival is probably one of the biggest film festivals in this move of Europe now (even though it is a very young festival). This year they screened well over 400 films (including over 200 feature films). It's perhaps less prestigious than the Camerimage but definitely more so than the Warsaw film festival. We change surface had Cristian Mungiu at the opening this year. So if anyone wants to go to Poland for a film festival. ENH would be the one I'd most recommend ;) AFAIK it has a similar repertoire to the Edinburgh festival but is way cheaper to attend! "The Stratford and Shaw Festivals - Great Canadian Theatre" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-01 23:56:22

Posted by Bruce MillerI returned on Monday from a five-day trip to Ontario. Canada. I was fortunate enough again this year to be able to alter my pilgrimage to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals the two largest repertory theatres on the continent. This measure for the first measure. I went by myself without Terrie and the kids and without Phil. I discovered to no one’s affect that solitary theatre sojourns are not my thing. Nonetheless it was a valuable and enjoyable experience. I flew out of Richmond last Wednesday morning via Jet Blue into Buffalo rented a car and drove the three or so hours to the change intensity town of Stratford. Ontario--on the Avon of course complete with swans. I checked into my B & B at around 6 pm the Palmyra House owned and operated by Steve and Meg Garden-Smith. My room and my very friendly accommodating hosts couldn’t have been nicer. The photos on the Palmyra accommodate website don’t do the beautiful home justice. I recommend the accommodations the eat and most especially the Garden-Smiths without reservation. Almost immediately after checking in. I walked to my first show. All Stratford theatres are within an easy walking distance from the comfortable and peaceful Palmyra House. I saw shows at Stratford on the following plan: Wednesday 8 pm – and absolutely hated not having anyone with me to talk to when the show was over—nothing worse for me than seeing a great show and having to keep my feelings to myself. I didn’t like I hopped into my Toyota Corolla and headed to Niagara-on-the-Lake a gorgeous flower-festooned town not far from Niagara Falls and domiciliate to the Shaw Festival. I tend to stay at whatever accommodations are most affordable and at the Shaw Festival that meant staying at the alleviate Inn in St. Catharine’s a small city about 15 minutes east. There are some beautiful B & B’s in Niagara-on-the-Lake but the ones that were available when I booked my room were outside my budget. I took Friday night off and then saw Shaw Festival productions on this plan: Saturday 12 noon – especially since I knew nothing of the show or the playwright before measure week. One of the best things about the Stratford and Shaw Festivals is the caliber of the acting. Many of the greatest U. S actors move to New York and/or L. A. In Canada the greatest actors seem to be drawn to Stratford and Niagara-on-the-Lake at least in season. The beat known name in the Stratford company is Brian Bedford (pictured to the left) who is internationally recognized as one of the finest English speaking actors alive in the world today. (I saw Mr. Bedford with Tammy Grimes in the Broadway revival of in about 1970 and I still remember it as the funniest compete I’ve ever seen.) But aside from Mr. Bedford the majority of the actors in both companies are first-rate world-class talents. It’s great fun to see your favorites in one show and then see them in a different show that evening or the next day and barely be able to discern that you’re watching the same person. Another great thing about the festivals is that you can see two or three shows a day every day object Monday. I saw nine shows in four and a half days of playgoing. That's my kind 'a town. My thing about the festivals is the compete selection. Go to Broadway these days and almost everything is a musical. At the Stratford and Shaw Festivals you can see Broadway-caliber productions of the wonderful but often less familiar plays of the world’s greatest playwrights. Of the nine shows I saw this move eight were shows I’d never seen before. And of cover. I didn’t see everything. What I missed due to limitations of measure and money were world-class productions of (Turgenev/Friel) and a couple other less familiar titles. Fun fact: the Stratford Festival opened on July 13. 1953. 19 days before the founding of Barksdale Theatre. Fun coincidence: at my last performance. I caught up with Scott Nogi (pictured to the alter) the very talented actor who appeared in Theatre IV’s production of when he was comfort a student at Godwin High School in the mid-90s. Scott went on to get his BFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU in 2001 studied with RADA in London and is now forging a wonderful go as an actor director and fight choreographer in NYC. He was visiting the Shaw Festival with his beautiful wife. Haley and was gracious enough to acquaint himself to me. Hopefully we’ll be able to reconnect with Scott soon here at Barksdale.
